Children's Sunday School

Sunday School Registration

Sundays at 10 am

Our family ministry at St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound provides a foundation for Christian Formation for every child. We offer small group classes for all ages, festivals, special events and community outreach opportunities throughout the year! Our goal is to introduce the Bible and support the spiritual connection every child has with God. By gathering together in intergenerational fellowship, children and adults alike form connections that strengthen faith and community.

12 months- 4 years, “Frolic” Class, held in the Nursery

This year we will be using a wonderful program called “Frolic”. The children learn that God made them, God loves them, and they have a best friend in Jesus! This class meets in the nursery.

K-2nd grade, “Godly Play”, located by the Parish Hall

Godly Play is a Montessori method of teaching Bible stories and Christian language in a way that enhances the child’s relationship with God. The children hear a story with beautifully crafted materials that enhance their understanding. They are also encouraged to wonder and explore the deeper meaning of the stories through art and play. This class meets in the Godly Play Room by the Parish Hall.

3rd-5th grade, “Whirl” Class, Held in the Edu. Hall

This fun class will explore how all the Bible stories relate to each other through the “Whirl” series. Each week they will See, Explore and Create. First, they will focus on a witty video, then explore biblical text, and finally play a game or do a craft. This class meets in the Education Hall.

Youth- 6th Grade-High School

Stephanie Rieman and Britton Perko will be leading our AMAZING youth in this class! This class will meet in the Youth Group room at the back left of the Parish Hall Building and will alternate Sunday mornings with Sunday evenings throughout the year.

Each classroom has Sunday School Registration forms that are required. Parents are to sign in and follow the safety pick up and drop off procedures for each class.

We ask parents to stay on church property while their children are in Christian Formation classes.

First Informed Communion

At St. Andrew’s, baptized children are welcome to begin receiving communion as soon as they are able to show interest. In the Spring, we will offer a First “Informed” Communion Class. First Communion is another opportunity for the children to accept Jesus in their lives.

Throughout the Year

On the First Sunday of each month, we have a children’s service. Children are invited to the altar during the Great Thanksgiving to get a better look at what happens during Holy Communion.

Caroline Johnson is the Director of Children and Family Ministry at St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound. She attended Cape Fear Community College and Lees McRae College in Banner Elk, NC studying Elementary Education. While she organizes both small group Sunday school classes for children and intergenerational large group events throughout the year, Caroline, herself, recently graduated from the Education for Ministry (EFM) program through the School of Theology at Sewanee. She is thankful for the opportunity to foster a love for learning for young people and support their spiritual growth in the church. She is a mother of four, has a love for nature, making art, and having fun with her family.

Stephanie Rieman

Tracy Hanson

Preschool Director

Tracy was born and raised in Hudson, New York and is a graduate of Siena College. After her husband Ken completed his service in the Navy, Tracy and Ken moved to Wilmington where they have lived for the past 25 years raising their two now adult sons, Nathanial and Kellen. The Hansons were invited by a friend to attend St Andrew’s On-the-Sound 19 years ago and have been here ever since. Tracy had served as a Sunday school teacher before being asked in 2005 to join the preschool staff as a teacher in the 2-year-old classroom. In 2017, she accepted the position of preschool director. Together with her amazing and creative team of teachers, she is committed to providing families with a loving and developmentally sound foundation for a lifetime of learning.

Welcome to St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound! What We Believe Children & Families Directions

Our name says a lot about us: St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound. While not overlooking Wrightsville Sound, we are close enough to the beach that our basic attitude is pretty laid back. We can’t help but feel that we track a little sand into the church whenever we enter. Our worship is traditional, but relaxed; our focus is on living our faith as God’s family in this place. Young families with kids, retirees, and folks in between find a comfortable home here.

Bring your faith and your doubts, your experience and your questions, and, above all, your hopes. There is comfort and joy in our community as share in worship, fellowship, learning, and service.

Plan Your Visit FAQs

Our namesake, St. Andrew was the first evangelist and came to Jesus trusting him as his teacher. Andrew wanted to learn, to know God, and to understand Jesus as Messiah.

We gather together in worship as we rejoice, pray, and contemplate the wonder of God. Our worship is best described as traditional and relaxed. Please do not worry about what to wear and when to stand up; after all Jesus wore sandals and we do too.

At St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound we do not tell you what to believe. You are invited into the journey at whatever place you are in your life. We are all sharing this journey together.

What We Believe

This church is known as one of the most family-friendly churches around!

Your presence is a gift to St. Andrew’s and we are honored to welcome the wiggling and noises children share in worship. Please know you are welcome, come and be comfortable.

"Jesus reached for a little child, placed him among the Twelve, and embraced him. Then Jesus said, "Whoever welcomes one of these children in my name welcomes me; and whomever welcomes me isn't actually welcoming me but rather the one who sent me.”
Mark 9:36-37 (CEB)

We are located on the way to Wrightsville Beach at the corner of Airlie Road and Military Cutoff Road/Oleander Drive, next to Airlie Gardens.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). We could as easily translate this as “where your money is…” and not miss the mark. When we give to support St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound we are helping to secure a place where our hearts feel at home. Everything we are as a loving community, our worship, our study, our service, and our play is founded on what we give together.

Come and see what God is doing in 2023

We are rediscovering what it is like for “two or three to gather” and we are rediscovering what it is to worship, study, and play together. We are grateful for those who support this church by their presence Sunday to Sunday, and we invite others to join us again. One of the sentiments I hear most often these days is, “It’s better when we’re together.”

As we move forward into 2023, we can only do so with your continued support...Click to find out more.
