What We Believe

What we believe is centered around worship that engages the hearts and minds of this congregation. People of all ages and talents are united through the ancient and contemporary liturgy of The Episcopal Church.

We believe that in the gathered, worshipping community, the church is revealed as the Body of Christ, inspired and empowered by God’s Holy Spirit to do God’s work within our church family and in the world.

In a world clamoring for our attention, our prayers, songs, and the stories of scripture remind us of our basic identity in God, and call forth, praise and service.

RESPECT - We will respect the dignity of every human being. We celebrate our unity in Christ while honoring our differences, always putting the work of love before uniformity of opinion.

COMPASSION - We will love our neighbors as ourselves. We believe as we move deeper in our faith, we will make a difference in our world.

INTEGRITY - We will proclaim by word and example the good news of Christ among ourselves and among those in the world around us.

JUSTICE - We will strive for justice and peace among all people. We believe transformation begins by strengthening our understanding of history and unjust structures of society in order to pursue peace and reconciliation.

INCLUSION - We will seek and serve Christ in all persons. We will extend the welcoming love of God to all.

STEWARDSHIP - We will sustain the gift of joy and wonder in all your works sharing what we have and who we are.

We will be and do this with God’s help.

    The Rev. Richard G. Elliott

    Rector

Most folks, from children to adults, call me Richard. I was raised in another tradition, but, like many, I encountered and found a home in the Episcopal Church while I was in college.

I have been an ordained priest for over 40 years. In that time, I have served large and small churches and college chapels, all in the Southeast. When I came to St. Andrew’s I once again had that feeling of coming home; a relaxed community, committed to community service and open to intellectual challenge and exploration. This church has helped me to grow spiritually and intellectually, and I feel truly blessed to serve here.

Alongside my active ministry I have an abiding interest in the Christian Spiritual tradition. Exploring Christian Contemplation has been a passion since I was in seminary. As one of my teachers said, “God’s first language is silence, the rest is interpretation.”

I have two children, Sam and Alex (boy and girl), both of whom live in Los Angeles and work in different areas of the entertainment industry.

Welcome to St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound! What We Believe Children & Families Directions

Our name says a lot about us: St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound. While not overlooking Wrightsville Sound, we are close enough to the beach that our basic attitude is pretty laid back. We can’t help but feel that we track a little sand into the church whenever we enter. Our worship is traditional, but relaxed; our focus is on living our faith as God’s family in this place. Young families with kids, retirees, and folks in between find a comfortable home here.

Bring your faith and your doubts, your experience and your questions, and, above all, your hopes. There is comfort and joy in our community as share in worship, fellowship, learning, and service.

    Plan Your Visit FAQs

Our namesake, St. Andrew was the first evangelist and came to Jesus trusting him as his teacher. Andrew wanted to learn, to know God, and to understand Jesus as Messiah.

We gather together in worship as we rejoice, pray, and contemplate the wonder of God. Our worship is best described as traditional and relaxed. Please do not worry about what to wear and when to stand up; after all Jesus wore sandals and we do too.

At St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound we do not tell you what to believe. You are invited into the journey at whatever place you are in your life. We are all sharing this journey together.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). We could as easily translate this as “where your money is…” and not miss the mark. When we give to support St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound we are helping to secure a place where our hearts feel at home. Everything we are as a loving community, our worship, our study, our service, and our play is founded on what we give together.

Come and see what God is doing in 2023

We are rediscovering what it is like for “two or three to gather” and we are rediscovering what it is to worship, study, and play together. We are grateful for those who support this church by their presence Sunday to Sunday, and we invite others to join us again. One of the sentiments I hear most often these days is, “It’s better when we’re together.”

As we move forward into 2023, we can only do so with your continued support...Click to find out more.
